What are Video Lectures?

Thanks to the emergence of video lecture platforms, such as Khan academy, a shift in pedagogy is underway. As video lectures support flipped and blended learning, many teachers are assigning them as homework, instead of the usual exercises. In turn, teachers are facilitating the exercises and activities during class time instead of giving lectures. A major reason video lectures are gaining traction is because teachers can now take advantage of the face-to-face time with the students by doing more interactive and collaborative tasks. Additionally, not all the teachers transmit the concepts through lecture in a clear and clever way, so students now have access to high quality recordings from the best speakers all over the world. Students can come to class prepared with questions based on the video lectures, and teachers can use class time to answer those questions and spark a deeper understanding of the concepts.

(1) How might this technology be relevant to the educational sector you know best?

  • Video lectures in higher education is not a new concept. Distance Learning was often comprised of video tapes of lectures from class. With services such as Youtube, it's easier to share videos with students in your class and throughout the world (ie. as mentioned Khan Academy). Many teachers are using video lectures to "Flip" their classroom. Personally, I use video lectures to supplement my classroom. Students come to class and I teach, they ask questions, they work on problemse etc.. Sometimes they have trouble with the material, or they miss class and I am not their to review or re-explain concepts. Video lectures help supplement what's happening in my classroom, not replace it.- lisa.koster lisa.koster Nov 28, 2012
  • I received cassette tapes of recorded lectures for my masters - there is very little new apart from the ability to remix, add quiz style content - The Stanford AI Mooc was part delivered in this way. THe ability to view video on almost any device also changes the game.- DaveP DaveP Dec 2, 2012
